Vladimir Duthiers (00:00):

31st annual Screen Actor Guild Awards in Los Angeles may have just thrown a little chaos into your predictions for the Oscar season. Some of the biggest stars in Hollywood were there all in one room. A lot of the predicted favorites did not win, a lot of challengers won instead, and that includes the biggest prize of the night.

Harrison Ford (00:18):

And the winner goes to Conclave.

Vladimir Duthiers (00:23):

The film, starring Ralph Fiennes, took top honors for Best Performance by a Cast.

John Lithgow (00:28):

But the Holy Father asked me to.

Vladimir Duthiers (00:31):

It revolves around the secretive ritual of selecting a new pope.

Colin Farrell (00:35):

Demi Moore for The Substance.

Vladimir Duthiers (00:37):

Demi Moore won Best Actress for The Substance.

Demi Moore (00:41):

There's been a slight misuse of the substance.

Vladimir Duthiers (00:45):

During her acceptance speech, Moore held back tears.

Demi Moore (00:48):

I just… there's just the words are kind of beyond me, so I'm just going to have to just say thank you. Thank you so much.

Michelle Yeoh (00:58):

Timothée Chalamet.

Vladimir Duthiers (01:00):

Timothée Chalamet beat out Adrien Brody and others in the Best Actor category for his portrayal of Bob Dylan in A Complete Unknown.

MUSIC (01:08):

If you go when snowflakes storm.

Timothée Chalamet (01:12):

But I want to be one of the greats. I'm inspired by the greats. I'm inspired by the greats here tonight.

Vladimir Duthiers (01:17):

On the TV side, Japanese feudal epic Shogun continued its success, nabbing four awards, including Best Ensemble.

Hiroyuki Sanada (01:25):

This award showing us that acting is a universal language.

Zooey Deschanel (01:33):

Only Murders in the Building!

Max Greenfield (01:35):

Only Murders in the Building.

Vladimir Duthiers (01:36):

It was a big shock for the cast of Only Murders in the Building, which clinched Best Comedy over FX's The Bear.

Selena Gomez (01:43):

We never win. This is so weird.

Vladimir Duthiers (01:47):

But the biggest moment of the night belonged to the incomparable Jane Fonda.

Jane Fonda (01:51):

Make no mistake, empathy is not weak or woke. And by the way, woke just means you give a damn about other people.

Vladimir Duthiers (01:59):

No stranger to political controversy, Fonda was fired up while accepting the Lifetime Achievement Award.

Jane Fonda (02:06):

We must not isolate. We must stay in community. We must help the vulnerable. We must find ways to project an inspiring vision of the future, one that is…

Vladimir Duthiers (02:18):

Yes.

Gayle King (02:19):

Ooh, Jane Fonda is still speaking her mind and she looks fantastic.

Vladimir Duthiers (02:23):

Amazing. She does look great.

Gayle King (02:24):

Yeah.

Vladimir Duthiers (02:25):

I love Demi Moore winning this award. I've been a Demi Moore fan since she was in the soaps, and just to see her get this recognition for being the phenomenal actress that she is, that she's always been, I'm just really happy, even though everybody in that category and in the Oscar category is deserving, I'm voting, I'm hoping for her.

Gayle King (02:42):

Yeah. It does seem like the Demi train is on the tracks.

Vladimir Duthiers (02:45):

Yep.

Gayle King (02:45):

But the big surprise was Timothée Chalamet because everybody thought Adrien Brody. That's why you can never say, "It's a lock," because you never know. Never know.

Vladimir Duthiers (02:54):

That's right.

Tony Dokoupil (02:54):

You never know. We'll be watching Oscars.

Gayle King (02:54):

Oscar's next Sunday.

Tony Dokoupil (02:54):

Five days away.

Gayle King (02:54):

Yeah, yeah.
